Your actor headshots are your calling card. It’s the first impression casting directors, agents, and industry professionals will have of you. A strong, professional headshot can help you stand out, showcase your unique vibe, and open doors. To get the best results from your actor headshot session, follow these key preparation tips:

1. Choose the Right Wardrobe for Your Actor Headshots

What you wear plays a crucial role in how casting directors perceive you. Keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Stick to solid colors; muted, rich tones work best. Avoid bright white, busy patterns, or large logos.
  • Think about your casting type. Your wardrobe should reflect the roles you want to be considered for, without getting too specific.
  • Layers work well… a jacket, sweater, or open button-down can add variety.
  • Bring options… aim for 2-4 outfits to give different looks. Typically one or two casual, one or two office, and then something you’d wear out for a nice dinner.
  • Avoid shiny or textured fabrics that might reflect light.
  • Keep it simple. The focus should be on your face, not your clothing.

2. Hair & Grooming Tips

  • Keep your look natural and authentic. Your headshot should represent how you look on a regular audition day. Come in looking more casual and natural, and you can always build up from there.
  • Plan haircuts in advance. If you’re getting a trim or color, schedule it about a week before your session.
  • Avoid drastic changes right before the shoot. Your headshot should resemble your current look.
  • For facial hair, be consistent. If you audition with stubble, maintain that look. If you’re clean-shaven, shave just before the session.

3. Skincare & Rest

  • Stay hydrated and get a good night’s sleep before your shoot.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure or aggressive skin treatments leading up to your session.
  • Use a light moisturizer to keep your skin fresh without looking shiny.

4. Expression & Posing for Actor Headshots

The best actor headshots capture authenticity, so think about the kinds of roles you want to land. As for what to prepare? Have a look at examples of headshots you like, but a good photographer will guide you through the shoot, and bring out your looks as a collaboration. I try to stay away from anything pose-y for headshots, as I believe it’s better to get a more authentic look for your headshot.

5. What to Bring to Your Actor Headshots Session

  • Outfit options (at least 2-4 looks)
  • A hairbrush, lint roller, and blotting paper
  • Lip balm, especially in winter.
  • Light powder to reduce shine.

6. Relax & Enjoy the Process

A great actor headshot captures confidence, personality, and authenticity. The photographer’s job is to make sure you feel comfortable so your best self comes through. Breathe, relax, and trust the process!
